When it comes to spending time together as a family, heading outdoors allows you to truly focus on each other since distractions and indoor to-do lists are nowhere in sight.

Getting outside gives you and your kids the ability to observe and learn from each other. Playing is significantly harder for adults as our brains are constantly swirling with responsibilities and concerns. On the other hand, kids are gifted with minds that are full of life and a never-ending longing for fun. Let their imaginations guide you as you spend time together and enjoy the abundance of entertainment the outdoors has to offer.

Enjoy The Sandbox Together

Kids of all ages love exercising their imaginations in a sandbox. A box of sand quickly transitions into a construction zone, a neighborhood, or a fancy restaurant.

Sandboxes are geared towards little ones, but adults can also participate by using their knowledge of the world to help expand their kids’ imaginative play. Kneel down next to your kids and invite them to your sand-baked cookie stand and have them use sticks or leaves as payment. You can act as the judge for their sandcastle competition or be involved in a high-speed car race through sandy hills.

Driveway Fun

The weather does not need to be perfect for your family to go outside. If the grass is soaked from the previous night’s rain, keep your activities focused on driveway play. Grab sidewalk chalk and map out an elaborate road complete with a parking lot and gas station. Have the kids use their favorite tricycles or scooters as they enjoy your chalk creation. Parents can participate in play by operating the gas station or running the car wash by blowing bubbles on the kids as they ride by.

Go For A Family Stroll

Grab your favorite stroller or push your kids on their tricycles as you head out into the neighborhood. Walking as a family has more benefits than just exercise. Walking together gives you ample time to get to know one another. Take advantage of these quiet moments by discussing your goals as a family, or turn your walk into an educational experience by observing the different types of trees as you pass by.

Obstacle Course

A well-planned out obstacle course is loved by all. Include obstacles that require throwing a frisbee or ball into a net, jumping over baseball bats, climbing up and over strong objects, or use wagons to pull appropriately heavy items across the lawn.

Planning and running an obstacle course will provide your family with the opportunity to practice healthy communication, and learn about the competitive levels of your kids. You may find that you learn something new about yourself too!

Wash The Family Vehicles

What better way to spend time in the sun together than to get soaked while doing something productive? Cars are almost always covered with dirt, grime, and splattered with insect remnants. Even if your vehicle isn’t too noticeably dirty, your kids won’t notice! They’ll be too busy hopping around with excitement when they see you bringing out the oversized sponges, buckets, and squeegees.

While they are busy washing, explain to them the value of working together to complete tasks and how thankful you are for their help. Finish off the day with a picnic so you can all refill your stomachs while drying off in the sunshine.

These Are Days Your Family Will Never Forget

Spending time together outside, and making an effort to play with your kids will be imprinted on their hearts for a lifetime. Show your family that spending time with them is important to you, and they will feel cherished and valued, resulting in a more joyful home life.
