As I embark on the journey of preparing for my own birth, I’ve been diving deeply into the transformative wisdom of gentle birth practices—pain-free birth, ecstatic birth, orgasmic birth, and freebirth. These are terms that once seemed beyond my reach, but as I learn more, I realize they are not only possible but deeply accessible to every woman who feels called to experience them.
Birth is sacred. It is the moment where a woman meets her deepest power, the culmination of an energetic exchange that creates life. Gentle birth is about honoring this powerful experience with respect, love, and trust in the body. It’s about breaking free from fear and surrendering to the process, so we can experience birth as it was meant to be: a natural, empowering, and transformative journey. Whether through water birth, wild birth, or unassisted freebirth, each path holds the potential for deep connection and healing.
Gentle birth refers to an approach that minimizes fear, pain, and stress during labor, creating an environment where a woman can feel safe and supported. The idea is rooted in the belief that birth doesn’t have to be painful and traumatic. By connecting with the body’s natural rhythms and tapping into mental and emotional tools, such as hypnobirthing and Ina May Gaskin’s wisdom, birth can be a blissful, empowering, and even orgasmic experience.
Water birth, freebirth, and wild birth are variations of this concept that allow the birthing mother to be in control of her environment, her body, and her baby’s arrival. These options give space for a woman to lean into the process, trust her body, and experience the full range of emotions and sensations with mindfulness and intention.
Labor begins when your body, in its infinite wisdom, knows it’s time. The first signs of labor might come as light cramping, the feeling of a low pressure, or a gush of fluids. The initial phase can last hours, even days, but it is crucial to trust in your body’s ability to begin the process naturally.
1. Early Labor: In early labor, you may experience gentle surges or waves of pressure. These sensations are the opening of the cervix as your body prepares for the birth. It’s important to stay calm, breathe deeply, and embrace relaxation techniques to keep your body at ease. Hypnobirthing, in particular, emphasizes the power of positive visualization and breathing through the waves.
At this stage, I recommend affirmations such as:
2. Active Labor: As the surges intensify, the cervix continues to open. During active labor, you may feel stronger pressure in your lower abdomen or back. This is where finding comfort is key. Some women choose to labor in water, where the warm water provides a soothing, weightless environment that helps relieve pressure and pain. Others may prefer to be in a quiet, dimly lit space, surrounded by trusted loved ones or a doula who can help create an atmosphere of calm.
Ina May Gaskin’s mantra, “Your body is not a lemon,” reminds us that we are capable of handling these sensations. This is the moment when we can learn to breathe deeply, focus on the rhythm of our breath, and trust that the intensity will ebb and flow like the waves of the ocean.
3. Transition and Pushing: As you move into the transition phase, you may experience an overwhelming urge to push. This is a critical and powerful moment when your body naturally guides you. The stretching and opening of your body in preparation for the baby’s arrival may be intense, but if you continue to breathe, relax, and trust your instincts, it can be a moment of incredible release and relief.
The key here is to avoid resistance and to lean fully into the sensations. Each push brings you closer to meeting your baby. The sensation of pushing can also be incredibly orgasmic and ecstatic, as you feel your body and baby working together in synchrony. During this stage, affirmations like:
4. Birth and Beyond: As the baby crowns and makes its way into the world, you will likely feel an immense sense of release, love, and triumph. The moment the baby is born is transformative, not just for the mother, but for everyone in the room. There is no feeling that compares to the moment when you look into your baby’s eyes for the first time. The world stands still as you bond with your little one in those first moments, skin-to-skin, exchanging love and energy.
After the birth, you’ll want to remain calm and rested. The first hour after birth is magical—a time when your baby can latch onto your breast for the first time, and your body begins to heal and recover. If you are doing a water birth, you may stay in the water for some time, feeling the warmth of the water as you relax into your new life as a mother. It's a gentle space for both of you to transition from the womb to the world.
To help prepare for your birth, here is a set of affirmations that you can use in the weeks leading up to the birth of your baby, focusing on surrender, trust, strength, and connection:
